Web Design Principles

Good design isn’t about showing off with flashy elements and templates. It’s about creating a site that’s easy to navigate, looks good, and is simple enough for anyone to use.
Several factors such as consistency, colours, typography, imagery, simplicity, and functionality contribute to good website design. Below are some best practices and guidelines that will help you when working on your OCDSB school website:
Consistency

Keep it Simple

Keep your pages simple so they’re clear and easy to navigate by keeping your website clean and clutter-free.

Break up large chunks of text by using smaller paragraphs or bullets to present key information. Use headers to create sub-headings.

Fonts

Fonts

Use standard, easy-to-read fonts that are legible and professional. Avoid bright, flashy or neon font colors.

Highlight only the essential words and phrases in bold.

Use less than 2 different font colors, styles and sizes on the page.

Colors

Colours

Use good colour contrast.

Dark text on a light background is best because it's readable for most audiences.

Only hyperlinks should  e blue font and underlined.

Images

Images should be relevant and add value to the website.

Don’t use bright flashing images.
Use the image manager to upload pictures so you can give them alt text.

Calendar

Content

Keep the content fresh and current. If your 2023 website has content dated from 2021, your visitors may quickly leave your site.

Make hyperlinks descriptive (don't use "Click here")

Accessibility
